Humans first synthesized plastics in the late 1800s, and their use has since exploded, becoming a vital part of our society. And plastics continue to be extremely useful to us. They extend the shelf life of perishable foods. They are an essential ingredient in medical devices, equipment, and affordable and insulating building and construction materials, among myriad other things (WHO, 2022).
Human beings depend on plastics at every stage of our lives, although the dangers of plastic exposure are only recently becoming studied and understood.
