Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen Dosages

Dosage Charts (for children up to 110lbs)

drawing of a doctor next to 3 bottles of medicineFirstly, acetaminophen, or Tylenol, is an over-the-counter pain medication and fever reducer approved for children aged six weeks and older.  Secondly, ibuprofen, or Advil or Motrin, is an over-the-counter pain medication and fever reducer for children aged six months and older.  In some cases, these mild medications can be given to younger children. However, consult your pediatric provider before giving acetaminophen or ibuprofen to any child under one month of age. 

As a general rule, take infants under one month to the ER for a fever of over 100.7° F.  For older kids, take them to the ER if they have a fever of over 103.5° F and if they aren’t responding to fever reducers.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Dosages for Fever & Pain

Please note: Do not administer Tylenol to children less than 6 weeks old. Do not exceed 5 dosages in 24 hours in children.

Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) Dosage for Fever & Pain

Please note: Do not administer ibuprofen for patients under 6 months of age. Do not exceed 4 dosages in 24 hours in children.

In conclusion, please call us for an infant under 1 month of age that you think needs pain medication.  For all other children, trust your instincts.  You know your child better than anyone else does.
